Project Details
Decades of dune erosion had compromised boardwalks, stairs, and retaining walls, threatening public access and fragile coastal ecosystems. To meet their restoration objectives, the City pursued a 2021 Coastal Management grant and, upon award, hired Abonmarche to create design documents and submit all required permitting paperwork. The project addressed two major erosion areas: a failing retaining wall at the base of the south dune and a large blowout at the dune crest. Restoration efforts included installation of sheet piling, grading, dunegrass plantings, and snow fencing to stabilize sand, protect sensitive habitats, and control pedestrian access, re-establishing safe public access while preserving the dunes’ ecological and recreational value.
Abonmarche led the project from kickoff meetings through design, permitting, and construction. Services included topographic surveys, updated cost estimates, preparation of plans and specifications, contractor bidding and recommendation, contract preparation, and grant compliance support following funding from EGLE’s Water Resources Division. The project ensured long-term protection for both the environment and the highly utilized boardwalk and beach areas.
