Project Details

The SR 19/Cassopolis Street corridor is the front door to the City of Elkhart. Exit 92 of the Indiana Toll Road brings hundreds of thousands of visitors into the city, many of whom end up staying overnight. Cassopolis Street is the primary connector to downtown Elkhart, shaping visitors’ first impressions of the city.

Through this project, Abonmarche transformed an ordinary stretch of road into an experience engraved with the City’s unique story and an energy embodied in the Vibrant Communities movement. Taking inspiration from the City’s industrial heritage and the theme of making motion, the plan utilizes architectural features, lighting, decorative hardscapes, and plantings to communicate movement in multiple ways. The centerpiece of this new streetscape is a dramatic aesthetic enhancement to the bridge over the Indiana Toll Road. Key elements of the bridge design influence the features of the streetscape. Coordination with the City of Elkhart, the Indiana Toll Road, and INDOT was required to ensure beauty, function, and structural integrity.
