Project Details

Plans to replace the Ransom Street interceptor sewer originated in the early 1960s, when relief sewer concepts were developed to increase flow capacity to the City of Kalamazoo’s Water Reclamation Plant. Over 60 years later, the aging sewer had reached the end of its useful life and capacity. Abonmarche was hired to assist with study, funding application, and design of a new 42 inch wastewater interceptor, along with full utility replacement and street reconstruction on Ransom Street in the City’s North Side neighborhood.

Abonmarche prepared a project plan for Michigan’s Clean Water State Revolving Fund, securing over $8 million in financing, including $550,000 in principal forgiveness, toward the $12.3 million project. Improvements included a new 42-inch sanitary interceptor, 12-inch water main, lead service line replacements, and upgraded drainage. A robust public engagement process guided the design of new on-street parking, lighting, landscaping, hardscaping, and expanded pedestrian facilities.
