Project Details
The Gumwood Road and Redfield Street intersection in Cass County had become a significant safety concern for motorists. The three-legged, skewed layout created confusion and encouraged high-speed turns, while elevation changes limited sight distance for drivers approaching from the west. With multiple Gumwood Road intersections located nearby, heavy turning movements and conflicting traffic patterns added to the problem, resulting in frequent delays and a history of crashes. These conditions made it clear that a redesign was needed to improve safety and efficiency.
Abonmarche partnered with the project team to address these issues and create a long-term solution. We assisted in completing the Local Safety Program application to MDOT, performed detailed route and topographic surveys of the Redfield Street and Gumwood Road rights-of-way, and developed a roundabout design concept. The proposed roundabout eliminates the potential for high-speed collisions, improves sight distance, and provides safer opportunities for turning movements. This project resolved long-standing safety concerns while delivering smoother, more reliable traffic flow at this critical roadway connection.
