Collaboration for total site redevelopment

Abonmarche worked with the City of South Bend Engineering and Community Development Departments along with the site developer, Great Lakes Capital Development, to redevelop an old Studebaker manufacturing site. This project included a sewer separation, road reconstruction and new water main, sidewalk, street lighting and trees on Franklin Street. It also included a new concrete roadway with pervious paver blocks and a subsurface detention bed under the parallel parking lanes.

Whittaker Street Redevelopment

Whittaker Street provides access to New Buffalo’s first-class beach.  The street had long been overlooked and was in need of major infrastructure repairs.

As Abonmarche designed for the necessary infrastructure improvements, it worked with city officials and residents to create a vision for the redevelopment of the community’s central business district (CBD).

Douglas Road Lane Expansion

Engineering a better traffic flow

Abonmarche designed and prepared plans for reconstruction and additional travel lanes for Douglas Road, increasing the traffic lanes from two lanes to five and six lanes on the east side of the SR 23 intersection. The project provided a new Portland cement concrete pavement with curbing, sidewalks, street lighting and a new storm water management system.

FedEx Distribution Facility

With online shopping booming, FedEx decided a large distribution center in South Bend was needed to meet demand for the company’s ground shipping services.

Abonmarche was brought in to conduct pre-construction surveys engineering, and construction administration for the project.

Preliminary engineering refined building and parking placements based on survey information and zoning ordinances.  A final site plan was completed and submitted to the Area Plan Commission and the City of South Bend for approval.

Allegan Riverfront Development

A community destination point

Abonmarche worked with the City of Allegan to develop the City’s under-used riverfront area. The riverfront area is located between picturesque buildings and the Kalamazoo River and can be seen from M-89, one of the main corridors into Allegan, making it an important potential draw for visitors driving through the City.

During the planning stages of the project, Abonmarche staff hosted and attended many public meetings, coordinating with City staff to gather area residents’ ideas for the project and to answer their questions.

Demotte NORWEJ Water Plant

Providing quality water to residents is a priority for the Town of DeMotte. To do so, keeping the Northwest Regional Water System (NORWEJ) in prime operating condition is imperative.  Abonmarche partners with DeMotte to provide engineering services to maintain optimal capacity and superior quality.  Providing studies and reports, Abonmarche, keeps the Town
Board abreast of issues and develops designs and plans to resolve them. Special projects also fall under Abonmarche’s realm, providing plans, specifications, permits, construction inspection, and anything else the town needs.

Grand Avenue

“Can you come back again next year?”

It’s a question engineering firms don’t often hear from residents impacted by construction, but that’s what Abonmarche staff were asked by Grand Haven residents following our Grand Avenue reconstruction project.

Abonmarche completed design, permitting, bidding, and construction administration and inspection services on a tricky 0.4 mile-section of Grand Avenue in Grand Haven. Roadway and utility construction began in April 2016 and was completed in September 2016.

South Westnedge Corridor

Improving a major artery to local businesses

South Westnedge Avenue is the primary corridor route for the City of Portage.  Abonmarche was hired to develop a gateway park at the northern city limit.  The site required a study of the adjacent Meijer parking lot and the location of the existing bus shelter to enhance access to public transit. Our recommendations included the realignment of a portion of the parking lot and relocation of the bus stop to the north side of Portage Creek to reduce previous pedestrian/vehicular conflicts.

Williams Street Reconstruction & Streetscape

Riverfront street improvements in southwestern Michigan

Williams Street runs along the riverfront and intersects with Phoenix Street, the corridor through downtown South Haven.  As this lakefront community has grown and developed, Williams Street has become a more important part of the visitor’s experience. Abonmarche designed and administered construction for streetscape, roadway, and utility improvements on Williams Street from Eagle Street to Dyckman Road to improve the aesthetic and functional experience of this part of downtown.
