Saturday, September 5th was an exciting day for residents and visitors in St. Joseph, Michigan as jets of water gushed to life at the new Whirlpool Compass Fountain on
Silver
Beach .

Abonmarche designed the fountain with assistance from Fountain Technologies of Chicago and Chip Reay of St. Louis. The floor of the compass is composed of 5 different colors of concrete and 20 interior fountain jets that operate with 5 computerized light shows. Eight water cannons located on the perimeter are timed to spray 35 feet into the air at 30 minute intervals.
The fountain is just one component of the Silver Beach Development designed by Abonmarche. Next year will see the opening of the
Shadowland
Convention Center, Curious Kids’ Museum Discovery Zone, and Silver Beach Carousel house.

Abonmarche Wins Civil Engineering Award |
Abonmarche is excited to announce that the company has received the 2008 Outstanding Civil Engineering Achievement Award for the Benton Harbor Arts District Beautification project. The annual award, presented by the Southwest Branch of the American Society of Civil Engineers, recognizes a civil engineering project in the Southwest Michigan area that contributes to the well-being of people and communities, impacts the physical environment, and shows resourcefulness in planning and solving design challenges.
The Arts District project, which encompasses six city blocks in downtown Benton Harbor, involved extensive infrastructure improvements. These included replacing deteriorating underground utilities, burying overhead utility lines, installing energy efficient LED lighting, constructing new roads, sidewalks and bike paths, and landscaping the area with trees and perennials. The $2.3 million project, which was completed on June 20, 2008, was made possible through the collaborative efforts of Abonmarche, Cornerstone Alliance, U.S. House Representative Fred Upton, State Representative John Proos, the EPA, MDOT, Southwest Michigan Commission and the City of Benton Harbor.
The success of the project has opened the door for future funding for additional improvement projects throughout the City of Benton Harbor.

Abonmarche to Assist with Niles Dam Repairs |
November 4, 2008
Following a significant storm event in mid-September, a 30-foot portion of the Pucker Street Dam north of Niles, Michigan collapsed, leaving local officials worried that the remainder of the earthen dam would give way.
In late October, Abonmarche was contracted to provide engineering and design services for repairs to the west training wall of the dam. The scope of services will include inspection of the retaining wall, evaluation of the extent of the erosion, making recommendations for the repairs, and preparing construction documents and specifications for use by the Niles Utility Department. Work is expected to commence within the next few weeks.
